Willow Street Yoga

Willow Street Yoga Center is one of the DC area's original yoga studios, with spacious studios in downtown Silver Spring and old town Takoma Park, MD. They offer over 130 classes each week to students of all ages and experience levels. Some of our special offerings include two levels of Pregnancy Yoga, classes for kids of all ages, Yoga Nidra meditation, Yoga & Abs, Yoga for Runners/Athletes, and Authentic Pilates mat classes. Willow Street Yoga Center seeks to ignite the flame of awareness, through the spiritual practice of Yoga .

Willow Street Yoga Classes

  • Belly, Mind & Spirit -Over the course of the session, you'll discover ways to quiet the stories in your mind, alter your habits and come away feeling great about the body you have and the body you're evolving. No yoga experience necessary.
  • Body Balance Yoga II A more detailed class giving a new understanding of whole-body patterning in posture and functions the interplay of movement and stability
  • Breath and Meditation is an exploration of some of yoga's deeper practices, including breathing techniques that quiet the mind and reduce stress as well as a wide variety of meditations that create balance and expand our potential. Open to all levels, though at least one session of asana is highly recommended.
  • Gentle Yoga-1hr One hour, combines warm-ups, gentle and restorative postures, yogic breathing, and guided deep relaxation to reduce stress and increase movement and vitality. Designed for students who prefer a class less vigorous than Yoga I
  • Gentle/Therapeutics Yoga integrates therapeutic applications of principles of alignment into gentle muscle toning and stretching, along with restorative postures, breath work, and meditation. Excellent for those working with injury, illness, or chronic pain or seeking a gentler class than Yoga I
  • Kids Yoga Teachers use games, stories, songs and rhymes to explore different yoga poses, breathing techniques, and ways of being calm and centered
  • ParaYoga II is the science of spirit and self-mastery. Classes offer unique sequences and visualizations that align with the teachings of Rod Stryker's ParaYoga technique, along with therapeutic alignment principles and balanced action
  • Pilates focuses on developing core strength. Exercises require concentration and focus on the abdomen, back and buttocks. Effects are cumulative, but even a single session can leave you feeling stronger and more aware of your strength.
  • Pregnancy Yoga is an all-levels class that helps expecting moms to develop the flexibility, concentration and strength needed during the transformative time of pregnancy.
  • Teens Yoga Empowers teenagers to become more self-aware and confident. Students gain a sense of well-being while developing strength and flexibility, and also learn breathing and relaxation techniques.
  • The Practice This class is for students with an extensive yoga background. Students must be able to hold a freestanding headstand, kick unassisted into handstand at the wall, and push up to Urdhva Dhanurasana with straight arms.
  • Tots Yoga Teachers use games, stories, songs and rhymes to explore different yoga poses, breathing techniques, and ways of being calm and centered.
  • Tweens Yoga helps children ages 8-12 learn techniques for concentrating, reducing stress and connecting with their bodies in a loving way. Breath is emphasized to focus and quiet the mind
  • Tykes Yoga Teachers use games, stories, songs and rhymes to explore different yoga poses, breathing techniques, and ways of being calm and centered
  • Vinyasa Flow is a continuous flow of postures linked together by the breath, emphasizing Sun Salutations and other creative flows
  • Vipassana Meditation is a continuous flow of postures linked together by the breath, emphasizing Sun Salutations and other creative flows. Students should be familiar with principles of alignment, in good health, and free of major injuries.
  • Yoga for Runners & Athletes uses a variety of yoga postures and pranayama breathwork to help athletes learn to ease various imbalances e.g. joint pain, shin splints, and tight hamstrings while increasing flexibility, agility, endurance, lung capacity and strength
  • Yoga for Special Conditions and Injuries is for those with limiting physical conditions (e.g.. serious spinal problems, severe arthritis, heart problems, chronic and acute injuries) who need extra individual attention. Class moves at a slower pace to optimize the potential for healing
  • Yoga for a Healthy Back & Neck is a therapeutic class for students with chronic neck and back pain and/or injuries, and focuses on balancing strength and flexibility in the upper back, neck, and low back. Practice is slow and gentle and suited for all levels.

Willow Street Yoga Teacher Training

Willow Street training is based on the Anusara® yoga system. "Anusara" means "to be in the Divine flow, or to move from the heart." Using this open-hearted and celebratory method of teaching, in conjunction with precise bio-mechanical principles of alignment, students can connect with their own innate joy and goodness.

WSYC Teacher Training

The WSYC Teacher Training is a nine month 108 hour program, 12 hours per weekend. Their program, combined with the 108 hour Anusara Immersion program is approved by Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level for national certification. The emphasis of this program is learning to teach the poses in the Anusara method, which includes heart-oriented language and Universal Principles of Alignment. It is a comprehensive training for Anusara teachers to fine-tune their teaching skills and understanding, and for experienced students who want to pursue teaching. The YTT prepares participants to teach over 60 fundamental poses, based on the Anusara method of hatha yoga

Anusara Yoga Immersion Program

Willow Street Yoga’s Anusara Immersion program is designed both for dedicated students and for aspiring teachers who are ready to study Anusara’s sophisticated and life-affirming system of yoga at a deeper level. The Immersion offers a comprehensive curriculum in three parts, totaling over 108 hours of study. Each weekend consists of a powerful mix of instruction, discussion, and yoga practice. Over the course of the Immersion, you’ll learn the essential elements of yoga philosophy, alignment and anatomy, as well as explore the deeper practices of pranayama and meditation. Between program weekends, you’ll have opportunities to connect with fellow Immersing yogis, including special monthly asana practices and study groups.
